Festival Season...it is here.
Updated: Apr 17, 2019
#FestivalSzn is upon us! This weekend kicks off Coachella Music Festival where thousands of people will occupy the deserts of Southern California, in their hipster-chic garb. Coachella turns twenty years old this year but before social media was a thing, influencers told us where to go and what to wear, Beychella* (more on that later), and Issa Rae centered an episode of Insecure around it, you really had to be in the know to know.
Outdoor music festivals are transitioning. If you asked someone to word associate music festivals five years ago, you may have gotten responses like mosh pits, stage-diving, grass, dirt, and crowded. Those are still pretty applicable but now you can add words like luxury trailers, designer clothing, and celebrity attendees to the list. Pharrell Williams is launching his Something In The Water festival this year in Virginia Beach. Pulling huge acts like Travis Scott, Migos, and Chris Brown. Bonnaroo, Rolling Loud, Lollapalooza, and a host of others are still going strong. Broccoli City returns this year with Lil Wayne and Childish Gambino as headliners. They sold 5,000 tickets in their inaugural year (2013) and will host 30,000 attendees this year. The success of the festival has forced its location to be moved just outside of Washington, DC to Fed Ex Field in Landover, MD, home of the Washington Redskins.
When Beyoncé performed at Coachella last year, she put together an HBCU themed performance and tore the stage down. I think her stadium style performance forever changed how we think of music festivals and the way in which they are produced. Music festivals are so popular and profitable that people are committing white collar crimes to put them on. Fyre Festival, anyone?
If, in the AB era, after-Beyoncé, you’re ready to take your place in the world of music festivals, Vivid Seats put together a comprehensive list for 2019. There's a festival for everyone this summer at all price points. Even clothing websites are curating festival wear lists on their sites to take the guess work out. It’s amazing! I really like the collections by Nastygal, Revolve, and Pretty Little Things.
As we besiege upon grassy knolls, sand, or paved lots this festival season, remember to get organized. You don’t want to miss anything so download BeeLine Travel App and plan your travel carefully. Happy #festivalszn everyone!
*Editor's note: Netflix released a documentary entitled Homecoming, detailing Beychella (Beyoncé's performance at Coachella. It includes behind the scenes footage of rehearsals (which are very important!) and candid moments with the Carter family. And if that wasn't enough, Beyoncé upped the anti and dropped a surprise live album of the same name to compliment the documentary. Wigs, snatched.
